10 Home Remedies for Cleaning Jewelry

Home remedies and ingredients that can be used to clean and shine jewelry

When it comes to cleaning your jewelry there is no reason to go out and buy expensive cleaning solutions. All the ingredients to keep any type of jewelry sparkling clean can be found right in your home and they are far less harsh than commercial cleaners are. Here are ten home remedies for jewelry cleaning.

1. Salt

The best remedy for any type of jewelry that is very dirty is salt. It will clean the scum out of even the finest crevices. Soak the ornaments in a salt and water solution and rub them gently to bring back their shine.

2. Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar works best on platinum and silver. Dip a clean cloth in the vinegar and gently polish the metal to increase its luster.

3. Bleach & Aluminum Foil

This procedure works best on silver. Wrap the silver in aluminum foil with a spoonful of bleach and let it sit for one hour. Then rinse with warm water and watch it sparkle.

4. Ammonia

Ammonia works best on gold and silver. Soak the jewelry for ten minutes, rinse under tap water and wipe them down with a soft cotton cloth afterward.

5. Baking Soda

Baking Soda is good for removing tarnish from silver. Mix a spoonful of baking soda with water and soak the silver in it for one half hour. Rinse under clear water and dry with a clean cloth.

6. Soap

Pure soap is the easiest home remedy for cleaning gold and bringing back its shine. Liquid soap is better than the caked form since it is milder on the soft metal.

7. Toothpaste

Use toothpaste only on silver jewelry. Just put on a small dap and polish it in for ten minutes to restore its glimmer. Let the paste soak in and then rinse with warm water.

8. Dish Washing Liquid

Dishwashing liquid can be used to quickly wash gold, silver, platinum or precious stones. It should not be used often or for long durations because it is harsher than most other home remedies.

9. Ketchup

Ketchup is used to clean precious stones. Drop a small dab of ketchup onto the stone and rub it in a circular motion to polish the stone. Rinse with clean water afterwards.

10. Beer

Pour a little beer over your gold jewellery and let it soak in for one half hour. Wipe it down with a soft cotton cloth, step back and watch it shine.
