Reduce Your Cavities This Halloween

Responsible candy eating is the key to dispel the damage of a sweet feast

Halloween is a scary time of year, especially for a dentist. Dr. Fred Peck, a dentist in Cincinnati, Ohio, is fearful that there is no way to avoid eating candy around this time of year but he has some suggestions to make the damage a little less frightful. There are ways to be sure your family does as little damage as possible, he says.

Some candies are worse on your teeth than others are such as lollipops or laffy taffys that keep the sugar in your mouth and rotting your teeth for long periods. If you stick to the smaller candies that dissolve quickly and dissipate after one or two minutes you are better off.

"Candies like Tootsie Rolls, taffy, Bit-O-Honey's, Milk Duds, all those types of things can not only break teeth but they're just in the mouth longer and they have a lot more duration of sugar which is more prone to allowing decay to start on a tooth. As opposed to something that's in the mouth for about 30 seconds,” Dr. Peck suggests.

After eating something sugary, do not brush your teeth right away. Rinse your mouth with water and wait to brush after a few minutes, says the doctor. "The acid environment allows the tooth to be susceptible to cavities to wear and abrasion. So if you're going in there with an abrasive brush or toothpaste you can wear down your enamel much quicker," he explained.

Using an over-the-counter fluoride rinse can also be effective and there are also high potency prescription toothpastes with fluoride that you can use to make your teeth stronger. Fluoride can also be used at night before you go to bed to help strengthen your teeth and make them less prone to cavities.
