Choosing a Photographers Laptop

The best laptops for the photographic profession must have distinctive characteristics

If you are a photographer, the laptop you use to work with your photos can make all the difference. Ample storage space is a top priority in choosing a photographers laptop. It must have enough gigabytes to handle all of your growing digital masterpieces.

The laptop must also have enough ports to handle external displays or devices and importing content. Moreover, the laptop must have excellent graphics capabilities. Two laptops rise above the rest when it comes to filling these criterions – the Macbook Pro with Retina Display and Lenovo’s ThinkPad W530.

The default position by photography loving laptop buyers and creative professionals is to turn to Apple and an obvious choice is the Macbook Pro with Retina Display. With five million pixels on the 15-inch and four million on the 13-inch the Retina Display has unmatched resolution.

Thanks to its all-flash storage, it can manipulate files with lightning speed. Loading, copying and saving take place in the blink of an eye and the battery life of the Macbook Pro is the best in the industry. You may want to wait until Apple upgrades to Intel’s Haswell processors before you pick one up.

If you are not partial to the Apple line of laptops, the Lenovo ThinkPad W530 is your best option. With its impressive slate of industry certifications, the ThinkPad W530 is classified as a “workstation” rather than a “laptop” by the company. Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) have certified the workstation for stability and proven performance. For greater image accuracy and color matching, the X-Rite Pantone color calibration is an available option.

The Lenovo ThinkPad W530 has over 120 applications, which are central to content creating and editing. If you are in to videography, the workstation also has Dolby Home Theater v4 audio technology. However, the best feature for still photographers is the number of ports and inputs it has. It has mini HDMI connectivity, a mini DisplayPort, a built-in 4-in-1 SD card reader and 4 USB ports.
