Over 7 Year Study Period, Head Injuries in Falls from High Chairs has Increased by 90%

The children were either standing on the chair or climbing from it at the time of the falls, suggesting that restraint systems were defective or not being used.

A new study has just been published in the journal Clinical Pediatrics that found nearly 9,400 young children in the United States are injured falling out of high chairs each year. The research was conducted at Columbus, Ohio’s Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and titled “9 Weird Ways Kids Can Get Hurt.” The researchers looked at the medical records of children treated in emergency rooms aged 3 or younger across the nation.

The study found that the rate of injuries involving high chairs increased by 22 percent over the study period, which lasted from 2003 through 2010. The study concluded that if a chair is not used properly and despite the chairs' perceived safety, children in high chairs can be harmed.

Alarmingly, head injuries were the most common type of injury, according to the study, followed closely by minor cuts, bumps and bruises. More alarming was the rate of increase in head injuries over the study period.

"Maybe even more concerning, the rate of head injuries has increased by almost 90 percent between 2003 and 2010, and I think it begs the question, what's going on?" said study researcher and director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Dr. Gary Smith.

The majority of the head injuries involved falls from booster seats or high chairs. In most cases the chair’s safety restraint system, if it had one, was defective or not being used as the children were either standing on the chair or climbing from it at the time of the falls.

In this rush and hurry world parents should make sure to use the restraints even for a quick meal and if the chair has none, return it. They should also check their high chair against the federal government's Consumer Product Safety Commission for product recall Website for any safety concerns.

"We know that over the recent years, millions of chairs have been recalled in the U.S. because of not meeting safety standards. But usually, a very low percentage of recalled products are actually returned," Smith said. "I believe high chairs are safe, if they haven't been recalled and if they are used properly. Parents need to check the high chair they are using hasn't been recalled. They also need be careful to use the restraining system, and use it every time."
