Leading Up to the Mac Pro Launch, Apple Offers the Sharp 4K Monitor

The Sharp PN-K321 4K Ultra HD LED is selling for €3,999 at Apple's European and British online stores.

In an effort to dispel concerns of users looking to buy the upcoming Mac Pro desktop, Apple is selling a 4K monitor from Sharp that can be used for ultra-high definition content creation. The Sharp PN-K321 4K Ultra HD LED monitor that displays images at a 3840 x 2160-pixel resolution is being sold for €3,999 (US$5,444) on Apple's European and British online stores. However, it is not yet listed on Apple's online store in the United States.

4K is the successor to current high-definition specifications. Some monitors and TVs already support 4K, which displays at a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution. According to the product description, the Sharp PN-K321 4K Ultra HD LED monitor shows, "four full HD screens on a single seamless display."

The Mac Pro high-end desktop, which Apple will begin shipping this month, is targeted towards engineers and creative professionals. With multiple graphics cards, the desktop allows the creation of 4K content. Professionals have voiced concerns about the lack of a 4K display from the new Apple Mac Pro

Apple has not directly sold a 4K display up until now and the company could eventually add 4K capabilities to its Thunderbolt Display monitor. The Thunderbolt displays images at 2560 by 1440 pixels. The Thunderbolt’s 2 ports in Mac Pro support DisplayPort and the Sharp PN-K321 4K Ultra HD LED has HDMI connectors and DisplayPort.

Sharp's IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) semiconductor technology allows smaller pixels to be packed into the same space as traditional monitors -- creating higher-definition images. According to the product description on the Apple Website, IGZO technology "supports increased pixel transparency and reduced current leakage, thereby making the monitor more energy efficient.”
