2 Year Old Burned In Camping Accident: How To Avert Camping Disasters and More Camping Tips

2 Year Old Burned In Camping Accident: How To Avert Camping Disasters With A Little Preparation And Practice

Sheree Mutton of TheLeader.com.au reported that recently a two year old girl was severely burned and taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital on Saturday after an accident at a Royal National Park camping ground in Sydney Australia.

“The girl suffered burns to her chest, arms and back from boiling water. She was treated at the scene by Bundeena Fire and Rescue NSW crew and paramedics before being airlifted by a Rescue 22 ambulance medical helicopter to Westmead Children’s Hospital where she is in a stable condition.”

Aside from obvious precautions, such as not allowing a 2 year old near flames and boiling water, staying safe while camping requires planning and execution.

Prepare healthy food that is safe and will last. Can veggies and beans are great along with natural beef jerky for protein. Follow these steps to keep your food safe:

  • Pack foods in air tight, waterproof bags or containers. Keep them in an insulated cooler if possible.
  • Wash hands and surfaces often. Use hand sanitizer when water is not available.
  • Separate raw foods from cooked foods. Raw meat will contaminate cooked foods and snacks with bacteria like salmonella and e-coli. This is VERY important. Always wash hands after handling raw meat.
  • Cook foods to proper temperatures (for instance, ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees). When camping, we recommend cooking to at least medium to avoid food poisoning of any kind.
  • If you have foods that need refrigeration, chill them promptly. If you will not have enough ice or access to refrigeration, over your camping period, do not bring raw meat with you. It’s just not worth it.

Also, do not feed wild animals. This can lead to bites which can cause serious life threatening illness and infections. Not only is this activity bad for you and your family, it is unhealthy for the wildlife and creates animals who lose their fear of people which in turn puts others at risk. This is why feeding animals will often get one removed from the premises when visiting a state or national park

Engage in safe physical activities. Safety precautions include:

  • No jumping, especially head first, into strange bodies of water. Some of the worst scenarios in regards to camping accidents are those in which people drown.
  • Always wear a helmet when cycling or canoeing. And anytime you’re in a water craft, you should be equipped with life vest and other water safety equipment as well.
  • Never hike or wander alone. Especially for you children! Keep a close eye on them at all times. Set guidelines in the form of rules for them and test them before you leave home. This sounds corny, but corny could save lives.

Prevention Equals Preparation

The Best thing you can do as an outdoors person is be prepared with equipment designed to protect you in the event that something goes wrong. Some items to be prepared with are as follows:

Emergency Mylar Thermal Blankets – Otherwise known as space blankets, emergency mylar thermal blankets are designed to keep you cool when it’s hot, and keep you warm when it is cold. It also works great as a liner for a fleece sleeping bag. This is the same technology that military medics use to keep wounded soldiers from shock. You should be equipped with at least 1 mylar blanket per person on your camping trip. They can be found very inexpensive on sites like amazon.com.

Magnesium Fire Starter – These magnesium fire starters, with a little practice are very easy to use and work great in damp conditions. When it’s cold, a fire can mean the difference between life and death.

Emergency Food – this is separate from the food you bring to eat. This should be stowed away as emergency food and rationed in case you and your loved ones are in an emergency situation.

Water Straws – A water filter straw will clean water that is in wild. It’s also recommended that you bring cans or a pot that you can use to boil water. Remember, virtually all pine or evergreen tree needles are high in vitamin C and can be used to make tea. This will not only restore moral, but it will help boost your immune system until you are found.
