Homeowners associations serve many roles, but one of their most important functions is facilitating a sense of community. Associations have long relied on old-fashioned newsletters to keep important channels of communication open, and to share community happenings with residents—but more and more, associations are turning to social networks to make this communication process even more efficient. In a new statement to the press, Kuester Management Group reveals some basic pointers for associations looking to step up their Facebook and Twitter game.

“There are several ways in which social media can be used to foster a stronger sense of communication within a HOA or a condo association,” remarks Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. “One thing you can do is keep homeowners in the loop about upcoming events—ensuring they know well in advance if there is going to be a neighborhood party or community happening, but also keeping them in the loop about upcoming meetings.” Kuester notes that posting meeting agendas to social media channels, and encouraging community participation, can often be effective.

Kuester also suggests that social media sites can be great channels for education and general information. “Whether you’re providing homeowner tips or reminders about HOA rules and regulations, social media can add real value to the community experience that your fellow homeowners have,” he says.

While knowing what to say on social media sites is important, Kuester also underscores the importance of knowing which topics to shy away from. “Facebook is not the place to humiliate homeowners who have broken rules or become delinquent on their payments, yet it is amazing how many associations use their Facebook pages this way,” he says.

The Kuester Management Group president concludes by noting that social media pages are not seen by current homeowners alone. “Prospective homeowners might also check out the association’s social media pages, so it is important to keep that audience in mind, and to always showcase the community in a positive light,” he advises.
