Rafael Lovato, Jr. Makes History At The 2013 No-Gi World Championships

Once again, Rafael Lovato, Jr., led Team Lovato in a successful outing at The No-Gi Championships, and marked a milestone for Americans as the most successful showing at the Black-Belt level at a World IBJJF event.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA, January 3, 2014 - Attendees at the 2013 No-Gi World Championships, held on November 2nd & 3rd, at Long Beach, California, were once again witnesses to history being made by Rafael Lovato, Jr., as he became the first person to win three different weight classes as a Black-Belt, and the first American to win three Black-Belt No-Gi World Titles. For this competition, Rafael moved up to the Ultra-Heavyweight Division, as his student, James Puopolo was in the Super Heavyweight Division.

Rafael Lovato, Jr., won his first two matches by points, and in the finals faced the Brazilian giant, Fabiano "Pega Leve" Sherner. Attacking submissions from his guard, Rafael played a smart match and won by 3-advantages. This was not the first time that Rafael Lovato Jr. made history in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He became the first non-Brazilian to win the Title in the Black Belt Absolute Division at the 2013 Brazilian Nationals in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2007, Rafael made history by becoming the first non-Brazilian to take home the title at The Brazilian Nationals in the Black Belt Weight Division.

Rafael Lovato Jr. has followed in the footsteps of his father, Rafael Lovato Sr., and is the head instructor at their academy: Lovato’s School of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts in Oklahoma City. Lovato’s School of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is Oklahoma’s only fully accredited Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, with instructors that are multiple certified USBJJF and IBJJF Black Belts. Having been in operation for over 15 years, the school offers self-defense programs such as: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Submission Wrestling/Grappling/No-Gi BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
