New Delhi/Gurgaon, January 29, 2014: The K D Singh Foundation- Support Cell for Rape Victims has initiated a series of ‘Life Skill Education’ Awareness Program across schools of Delhi NCR and Haryana. This program will work towards creating awareness among school studentsabout sexual aggression, identification of sexual predators and action to be taken against them.The Support Cell of the Foundation - a grassroots-level social welfare organization providing comprehensive three-tiered medical, legal and rehabilitation support to rape survivors across 17 districts of Haryana and Delhi NCR is leading the program. The first step of the program involves awareness camps and sessions across the various regions and is expected to reach out to over 10,000 students. In the first phase workshops are being conducted in Delhi, Karnal, Gurgaon and a few other districts.
The sessions include informing school children about various forms of sexual aggression and how to identify those. This is done through videos and demonstrations. Child-friendly case studies and group activities are also a part of the orientation program. Role plays where children are placed in situations where they need to react against sexual offenders are also played.
Dr. K D Singh who has established the Foundation and is also MP, Rajya Sabha and Head-North India, All India Trinamool Congress, says “The recent spate of sexual and other crimes against women once again indicate the need to change social attitudes towards women in the country. Our Foundation through its various activities aims to spread awareness among people, especially women& childrento make them aware of their rights under various laws. The idea behind the campaign is to spread awareness among children and protect them from sexual violence. We are also looking at this from a Gender sensitization angle. Incidentally, according to National Crime Records Bureau, Haryana ranks 16th nationally accounting for 3% of rape cases in North India.
