LED Lighting and Solar Panels will Turn Community Center into Power Plant

The improvements are estimated to produce more than enough electricity to run the facility and any excess electricity will be sold back to the national grid.

To improve the facilities at the Deepings Centre on Douglas Road for the customers, businesses and volunteers that use them, Deepings Community Trust has installed LED lighting and solar panels on the community center in Market Deeping. The installation is part of a wider program to reduce the running costs and has already halved its electricity costs.

“We are staffed entirely by volunteers but we still have to raise £1,500 a week to keep the centre open. We have no sustainable grants from local or central government,” said Cathy Pridgeon, chairperson of the Deepings Community Trust, which runs the centre. “These energy efficiency measures have significantly reduced our energy costs as well as making the centre more attractive to users.”

Persimmon housing development on Godsey Lane, Market Deeping is funding the project with S106 monies. More improvements and green initiatives at Deepings Centre are waiting to be approved by the South Kesteven District Council such as a new atrium within the building, passive ventilation and more efficient use of natural lighting.

“We managed the opportunity in a way which not only guarantees an income from the centre for the next 20 years, but also showcases emerging technologies and how they can be integrated into existing community buildings,” said Hydrostat energy consultant, Ashley Baxter. Hydrostat energy consultancy, also based in Market Deeping, is assisting with the project.

Using half the energy of fluorescent tubes the LED lights were installed by Cawoods Electrical, based in Langtoft. Surplus electricity will be sold to the national grid under the scheme and the solar PV panels will be able to generate as much as 10kW of electricity. They were installed by Redmile Solar.
