Human Hair Grown in the Laboratory

Although "engineering solutions" remain, scientists are one-step closer to a cure for baldness.

A research study that was recently reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences claims human hair was grown in the laboratory to create new hairs from tissue samples. The team of United States and United Kingdom scientists say they have moved a step closer to reversing receding hairlines and banishing bald spots. This team consisted of scientists from Columbia University Medical Centre, in the United States and the University of Durham, in the United Kingdom.

Although far more research is needed, the group said its technique brought baldness treatment a “step closer” to foolproof and might have the  "potential to transform" the treatment of hair loss. There are transplants, which move hair from the back of the head to cover bald spots and drugs to slow the loss of hairs but the team was actually able to grow new hairs. To grow many new hairs the team started with material taken from the base of a hair, a procedure that was successful in animal studies but proved to be tricky in human hair. The material grew new skin cells instead of hair with the same type of human extraction.

Dermal papillae, the cells that form the base of each hair follicle, would transform into skin instead of growing new hairs. The breakthrough was discovering that by clumping the cells together in "3D spheroids" the cells would keep their hairy identity. Human skin was grafted onto the backs of mice, while tissue was taken from seven people, grown into 3D spheroids and transplanted onto the mice. After six weeks, in five out of the seven cases, new hair follicles formed and some new tiny hairs began to grow.

Prof Colin Jahoda, from Durham University said reluctantly, "It's closer, but it's still some way away because in terms of what people want cosmetically they're looking for regrowth of hair that's the same shape, the same size, as long as before, the same angle. Some of these are almost engineering solutions. Yeah, I think it will eventually be treatable, absolutely. It's hard to say exactly how long that would take, but the fact that we've done it now should reawaken interest."
