Laguna Beach, CA., December 23, 2013 - As the annual NCAA bowl games approach, esteemed University of Southern California (USC) celebrates an historic 125 years of athletic tradition. USC is known for its great Trojan football program and unparalleled athletic success in the sports of baseball, tennis, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, golf, rowing and volleyball which has resulted in 120 national team championships, an unprecedented 419 Olympians, and 52 NCAA Postgraduate Scholars. Greg Michaels, CEO of Southern California Telephone & Energy, was honored among his peers and fellow athletes at the Los Angeles Collesium (USC’s home stadium) in Los Angeles. Former USC Men’s Varsity Tennis athletes were reunited and recognized on the field at half time of the USC vs. UCLA football game.
In 1986, Michaels’ first year on the USC Men’s Tennis Team, the Pac10 Champions played for the National Championship against Georgia with a record of 32-0 going into the finals. It wouldn’t be until age 46 that Michaels would win his first National Championship at the 2013 World Team Tennis (WTT) National Championships in the open division. The finals for the competition were held during the weekend of November 2 - 3, 2013 at the second largest tennis stadium in the world; Indian Wells Tennis Garden near Palm Springs, California. The owner of the Tennis Garden, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, hosts the ATP Tennis Tournament BNP Paribas Open at the facilities and plans to grow the Tennis Garden into the largest stadium in the world. Michaels and his “Dreamkillers” teammates – most of whom are half his age – took the court with a vengeance sweeping all matches without loosing a single set. The team included two current ATP touring professionals, former professionals like Michaels, and former collegiate All American tennis players.
Greg Michaels is the founder and chairman of Southern California Telephone & Energy (SCT&E), a spinoff of a company that he formed shortly after he left his professional tennis career in 1994. SCT&E is a utility in the Unites States and is currently developing power generation projects around the world. When asked about the correlation between his business and tennis success, Michaels stated, “Business is much like all high level sports. You have to have the same discipline, dedication and mental toughness to be successful.”
