Chapters Capistrano Commends National Mental Health Awareness Month, Offers Dual Diagnosis Options in Addiction Recovery

As Americans and health professionals celebrate National Mental Health Awareness Month, Chapters Capistrano discusses how important mental health is in addiction recovery.

Although Mental Health Awareness Month is an initiative that has been in place for more than 60 years, Chapters Capistrano has found that growing attention on the event is inspiring. May is designated as National Mental Health Awareness Month — a time that gives the public an opportunity to explore how to better recognize issues regarding mental health and treatment options. The addiction recovery professionals at Chapters Capistrano commend the work of mental health leaders for raising awareness, particularly in breaking down stigmas that have prevented many from seeking the comprehensive help they need to establish life balance.

The importance of Mental Health Awareness Month has grown so high that the event has spurred commentary from President Barack Obama. In a recent White House statement, Obama explains, “Over the course of a year, one in five adults will experience a mental illness, yet less than half will receive treatment. Because this is unacceptable, my Administration is fighting to make mental health care more accessible than ever. Through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), we are extending mental health and substance use disorder benefits and parity protections to over 60 million Americans.”

Mike Shea, founder and owner of Chapters Capistrano, responds, “The president’s outspoken support of greater mental health and addiction recovery resources is incredibly empowering. Not only will these acts help provide more individuals with the professional care they need, but this leadership will help diminish barriers that prevent patients from recognizing issues in mental health and addiction.”

In response to Mental Health Awareness Month, the team at Chapters Capistrano highlights the growing importance of dual diagnosis treatment options in addiction recovery. “These modalities are incredibly important to ensuring that individuals recover in a more complete fashion,” says Shea. “Through our dual diagnosis initiatives, Chapters Capistrano professionals strive to help guests not only understand addiction, but also any related mental health issues that may promote substance abuse—including PTSD, depression and stress.”

While mental health challenges can heighten risks for addiction and relapse, Shea also notes that it is important to focus on how substance abuse in individuals can impact the mental health of their loved ones.

“Addiction recovery is not just about healing for the addict, but also for those close to the individual. Friends, family members, children and spouses can all be affected by a person’s substance abuse—so it is vital that they also take part in the recovery to ensure their mental health is not ignored in the process,” Shea states.

Chapters Capistrano utilizes its “Family Program” as a way to build trust and support in relationships that may have been impaired through substance abuse. This initiative provides comprehensive approach to counseling and involves those close to the matter; this remains essential to ensuring that addiction cycles do not continue or enable greater mental health issues.
