SCRIPT WORKSHOP TO BE HELD FOR GROUNDBREAKING PLAY ABOUT THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

Atlanta, GA – Published author J. Oliver Glasgow is planning on holding a script workshop in Atlanta, GA for “Red Stick,” a play that will attempt to discuss the tragic, yet vital events of the 1953 Baton Rogue Bus Boycott.

Dr. Adam Fairclough, an American Civil Rights historian and a professor at Leiden University, has said the following about the events that inspired “Red Stick”.

"The Baton Rouge protest pioneered many of the techniques that became standard practice in the civil rights movement of the late 1950s and 1960s: mass non-violent protests, the leadership of Baptist ministers and the foundation of alternative transportation systems."

Despite its importance in American history, the Baton Rogue Bus Boycott remains largely unknown by many in this country. The Montgomery Bus Boycott, which happened a couple of years later and was led by notable historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, has largely overshadowed the events that took place in Baton Rogue. But the success that Dr. King and others found in Montgomery and elsewhere would not have been possible without the events that transpired in Baton Rogue in 1953.

“Red Stick” is a significant piece of theatre that examines a critical, yet frequently overlooked part of American history. Telling the story in an accurate, fact-based manner is of the utmost importance. Because of this, “Red Stick” has already been fully vetted by a historian. While some events and characters are condensed in consideration of length, the play remains true to public accounts and records pertaining to the Baton Rogue Bus Boycott.

Glasgow’s goal now is to host a script workshop in Atlanta in order to make the play the best it can possibly be. This workshop will include a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis and round-table discussion, a visions session that will address the logistics of putting on the play, and a multi-day script reading focused on making the script perfect. Finally, the workshop will produce a 'road map' that will establish production milestones and ROI goals.

In order to finance the workshop for “Red Stick,” Glasgow has created a page on Kickstarter where people can donate towards the project. Glasgow hopes to ultimately produce the play in Atlanta or perhaps even Broadway, but the workshop is a necessary step towards reaching that goal.
