Vir2us, Inc. Launches iKit - Software Solution For Securing Critical Infrastructure Against Cyber-Threats Aims to End the Game with Hackers

Cyber security tool kit looks to empowers critical infrastructure industries to eliminate vulnerabilities created by legacy systems.

San Francisco, Calif.  May 06, 2013 , Vir2us today announced the launch of its Immunity iKit, a software technology tool kit that is designed to help IT and industrial control systems (ICS) professionals add next generation cyber security technology to existing software applications that control critical infrastructure. The tool kit is a downloadable software package that will be available in June to companies and users that register on the company's website. Rebecca Brown, spokesperson for Vir2us, said "the tool kit is designed to be an elegant, economical and easy-to-deploy application in existing control systems with little or no disruption.

President Obama and Federal lawmakers have proposed legislation to secure the nation’s critical infrastructure in recent months, and in recent days the President issued an Executive Order in response to the increasing number of cyber-attacks on government and the nations critical infrastructure. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has identified seventeen areas of critical infrastructure that the Federal Government expects to address.

“The iKit is was created by Vir2us to enable firms to quickly build the company's patented technology into computers and software applications that control critical infrastructure", said Anthony More, Vir2us’ Chief Technology Officer. “The U.S. and other nations are highly vulnerable to critical infrastructure cyber threats. iKit will help utilities to begin complying with new government standards for cyber security.”

One of the problems facing utilities in securing critical infrastructure is the high number of legacy computer systems in their networks, some of which are more than twenty five years old. " iKit allows utilities to implement next-generation cyber security technology in most legacy systems, solving a huge challenge for these service providers", More said.

According to More, iKit works to isolate computer processes and files by serving up disposable computing environments. This approach to computer processing creates an inherently secure environment where malicious software can't propagate, persist and threats are recognized before they can do serious damage. Most of todays security solutions have tended to focus on keeping hackers out of systems but seem to provide little security once these checkpoints have been breached. NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, cited the Vir2us technology in a recent publication of recommendations for Smart Grid, the U.S. sponsored program for modernizing the nations power grid infrastructure.

“Vir2us' charter is to change the status quo through applied technology and innovation”, said the company’s CEO, Ed Brinskele. “Securing critical infrastructure is a challange that some industry experts have said is unsolvable. We think iKit, will give ICS utilities and technology professionals the edge they need to secure these systems.
