In order to find employment, it is necessary to engage in some professional networking, forming meaningful connections both online and off. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, some 70 percent of all jobs are found through networking. Doing so is easier said than done. Clark says one of the deadliest networking errors is having a “me-first” mentality. “When you go to a networking event, you should be willing to listen to others and help them facilitate meaningful connections, even if it doesn’t directly benefit you,” she comments. “Put yourself in the role of a connection facilitator, introducing people who might be able to work together well. If you don’t do this, you’ll likely leave the event empty-handed.”

Clark says smart networking extends to LinkedIn, as well. “The most important point to make about LinkedIn is that the only connections that truly matter, in terms of offering you employment, are people who can remember your name,” she observes. “Think twice before bothering random people on LinkedIn just for the sake of having more connections. This just isn’t a great use of your time and networking resources.”

The Grammar Chic CEO also advises against neglecting other social channels. “That’s another deadly networking error—thinking that LinkedIn is the only site that can help you advance your career,” says Clark. “Actually, it is vital for job seekers to build industry authority on sites like Twitter and even Facebook—and perhaps to leverage that authority for meaningful connections.”

For all of this, though, Clark’s strongest admonition is for job seekers to leave their computers occasionally to attend actual networking events. “Do people land jobs based solely on LinkedIn and Twitter? Absolutely,” she says. “However, most recruiters and employers will tell you that face-to-face relationship building wins out every time. Attending professional networking events from time to time is essential.”
