Chapters Capistrano Urges Women to Seek Addiction Recovery, Offers Flexible Treatment

With a new SAHMSA report revealing more men seeking substance abuse rehab than women, Chapters Capistrano encourages greater gender equality in addiction recovery.

As more Americans become aware of the threat of addiction, more individuals are finding the help they need to recover from substance abuse. While many addiction recovery professionals are encouraged by the diminishing stigma surrounding treatment, Chapters Capistrano—a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Southern California—notes that there is still a lot of work to be done to raise awareness about treatment options.

In particular, the staff at Chapters Capistrano notes that there is a greater need to encourage women struggling with substance abuse to enter a reliable addiction recovery center. This addiction recovery facility cites a recent report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that used data from the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. SAMHSA reveals, “Twice as many men age 18 and older—1.2 million—entered substance abuse treatment facilities in 2011, compared to about 609,000 females.”

According to Chapters Capistrano, what is most concerning about this evidence is that women are still reporting heavy substance abuse activities. For instance, the report explains, “22 percent of women ages 18 to 24 said marijuana was their primary substance of abuse versus three percent of men… Women age 65 or older were nearly three times more likely to abuse prescription pain relievers such as oxycodone than men of the same age.”

Mike Shea, owner of Chapters Capistrano, explains, “Addiction does not discriminate based on gender. There has been a higher degree of evidence in recent years suggesting that women—particularly moms—have increased substance abuse involving alcohol and prescription drugs.”

For Shea, the overall message of this collective data suggests that while more women are abusing substances, not enough are seeking the professional addiction recovery options they need to lead healthy, sober lives.

“There are many reasons that women may not be seeking addiction recovery over men. For one, more men may be charged with substance abuse-related crimes and must enter court-ordered rehabilitation,” Shea adds. “Mothers, in addition, may feel shame as a result of their addiction and may avoid seeking help in fear of failing their responsibilities to family.”

Chapters Capistrano believes both men and women should remain aware of their options for addiction recovery and should seek immediate help if a substance abuse problem is recognized. This facility, based on the coast of Southern California, supports non-judgmental addiction recovery fit for both men and women with its flexible treatment programs, private rooms, as well as a focus on whole health and wellness.
