Classic Swing Dance Classes Taking Center Stage at Academy Ballroom

Leadership Expert Sponsors Six Week Dance Series to celebrate Historic Harlem Era

Dance is the perfect metaphor for effective communication. The lights are dimmed as all eyes are trained on the dancer. The story is woven through whatever genre and tools the dancer chooses to work with. And when the dancers are working with Swing, well, the message is clear – energy and fun! This original American dance form took Harlem by storm in the 1920’s during the height of the Harlem Renaissance. The athletic twists, gymnastics and contortions that dynamic African American dancers incorporated into the dance earned the moniker Lindy Hop.

Lindy Hop and Swing dance are making a comeback and local couples and individuals have a unique opportunity to be ahead of the trend. Dr. Daryl Green is presenting a six week series entitled, Swing at The Savoy, taught by renowned dance instructor, Emily Norris, beginning on September 6th on Fridays at 6pm.

Lindy Hop was a fusion of African and other dances that pre-date the swing and jazz era. Norris talked about the African American influences on Swing. “African-Americans influenced swing in a huge way, especially in the 1920s when it was really gaining popularity. The posture and many of the movements-especially the freedom for creativity-are from African dance, “she said.

Leadership Development expert and author of the book, Writing for Professionals, Dr. Daryl D. Green, lectures and writes on contemporary issues impacting individuals and businesses. He shared why Norris is the best choice for this series. “Emily Norris is one of the best dance instructors in the country. She has a great personality. When she tells me to swing, well…I just swing,” he said.

Swing was meant to be fun and that is exactly what students in this series will experience. They will learn the fundamentals of swing, with an emphasis on Lindy Hop and the Harlem influences. It is an excellent way to de-stress and, according to Norris, couples find it to be very therapeutic and strengthening to their relationship. And singles may make a love connection!

Classes begin on Friday, September 6, at Dance Tonight (formerly Academy Ballroom), located at 4467 Kingston Pike in the Shoppes at Western Plaza. Contact 865-539-2259 to register or email: dancingknox@yahoo.com for more information.
