AIHCP.org Publishes Guide To Careers In Addiction Therapist

AIHCP.org has published a helpful guide to careers in addiction therapist, which is a field of counseling that aims to deal with issues of sustance abuse.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration officially recognizes that addiction to alcohol and other substances should be classed as a disease. The Administration also published figures that show that around 20 million people in the U.S. have addiction problems.

Those people who are unfortunate enough to have an addiction will find it very difficult to quit the addictive substance without the benefit of professional help. The most successful treatments are those that include emotional counseling combined with replacement therapy using non-addictive, alternative substances. A professional addiction therapist will be able to prescribe non-addictive replacement drugs, and monitor the addict's progress. These replacement drugs help to reduce the physical stress caused when quitting addictive substances.

Abuse of prescription drugs amongst adolescents and young adults is on an upward trend. New research has shown that providing preventative counseling programs to young adults can significantly reduce the problem. Research conducted by Iowa State and Penn Sate universities reveals that youngsters being exposed to community based, preventative measures showed a marked reduction in prescription drug abuse. These youths were also more likely to reduce their intake of other popular drugs and substances like alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants and methamphetamines.

It is to be hoped that similar programs, which are clearly successful, will become more widespread. The longer a person takes a particular addictive substance, the harder it is to quit. Additionally, the quantity of a substance consumed by an individual tends to rise over time, adding to the problem. Early intervention is the best treatment.
