High Intensity Training Forecasted to be Major Trend in 2014

The American College of Sports Medicine released its predictions of fitness trends for 2013, and while high intensity training was nowhere to be found, experts predict that in 2014, it will be a major trend in sports medicine.

With 2013 coming to a close, the American College of Sports Medicine has once again released its list of fitness routines that are expected to be big in 2014.Surprisingly, the No. 1 spot belongs to HIIT, workouts that involve short bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by a short periods of rest. HIIT wasn’t even on the list of trends in 2013.

However, there is a reason why experts near and far agree that HIIT will become a big trend. As society tells us we want more faster, HIIT is the way to get the weight loss and muscle density quicker, though not necessarily easier.

Shannon Fable, who works as the director of exercise programming for the international Anytime Fitness franchise, and who also serves on the San Diego-based American Council on Exercise’s board of directors, the workouts usually take less than 30 minutes and deliver “twice the results in half the time.”

According to Fable, HIIT workouts have been around for years, but thanks to programs such as CrossFit (which HIIT is basis for) P90X, Insanity, TurboFire and Tabata training, more and more fitness buffs are turning to the practice to get fit.

Fortunately for those who aren’t into pushing themselves past their breaking points, HIIT workouts are not the only routine that’s expected to be trendy. The list released by the American College of Sports Medicine pitches everything from ancient yoga practices to new twists on personal training to races that would put the 5k run where it’s mouth is.
