Grammar Chic, Inc. Warns Against Top Web Content Errors

The team at Grammar Chic, Inc. advises about some of the most common mistakes made in written Web content.

A company’s website is one of the most important pieces of marketing collateral it has—arguably the most important, as it functions as a sort of virtual storefront and business card rolled into one. The company website often provides consumers with their first impression of a business. What is more, the quality of a website can determine search engine visibility; it can shape the business’ online reputation, and it can ultimately either generate leads or hamper the sales process. As such, it is critical for business owners to ensure solid written Web content. In a new statement to the press, the writing team at Grammar Chic, Inc. reveals some of the top Web content blunders for business owners to avoid.

“Writing compelling and effective website content is part art and part science,” comments Amanda E. Clark, the CEO and editor-in-chief at Grammar Chic, Inc. “Some of it is subjective and qualitative, but there are also some definite, clear-cut errors for business owners to avoid—because when those errors are made, they dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the website content.”

Clark says that one mistake some business websites make is sacrificing readability. “Business owners are often so excited to talk about their companies that they fail to self-edit,” she remarks. “This can lead to the ‘wall of text’ approach, in which there is a huge, unbroken paragraph of text that is simply hard to read. On longer Web pages, it is important to include paragraph breaks, bullet points, subheadings, and other elements that ease visibility.”

Josh Hurst, the content marketing strategist at Grammar Chic, Inc., comments on another prevalent Web content error. “One thing we often see, in auditing our clients’ websites, is that they fail to include a call to action on every page of the site,” he notes. “It is conventional to have calls to action on the Home page and perhaps under the Contact section, but nowhere else. This is an error; a strong call to action is needed on every page of the site.”

A related error is burying the conclusion at the end of the page. “You have to assume that your readers are only going to skim your first paragraph, so all important points should be included there,” Hurst affirms.

Clark adds another Web content error to the list. “Often, we see company ‘About Us’ pages that are so caught up in telling the company’s story that they fail to offer value to readers,” she explains. “The company website should always be benefits-driven. Even when telling the story of your brand, it is important to show your customers where they fit into that story.”

Clark says business owners who are concerned about the quality of their Web content should have a content audit performed. “We recommend a careful audit of the content, and, if needed, revision or rewriting,” she notes. “Given the important role that the website plays for small businesses, this is not something to neglect or to leave to change."
