Angelini & Associates Architects, an Ann Arbor Michigan architectural firm, won the prestigious 2014 American Institute of Architects Huron Valley Chapter Building Honor Award for their design work on the new Kuyper Hall at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa.

ANN ARBOR, MICH., MARCH 11, 2014 – Kuyper Hall at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, designed by Angelini & Associates Architects, is a 2014 juried Honor Award Winner of The American Institute of Architects Huron Valley Chapter. The Kuyper Hall Building Honor Award was one of four awarded this year.

Robert Taylor, Director of Resident Life at Dordt College, said “It is Angelini & Associates’ experience and expertise that allows them to push the envelope without sacrificing design integrity. As a result, they are creating uniquely customized spaces that are completely tailored to the wants and needs of their client.”

Dordt College's newest residence hall opened its doors in 2010 to welcome over 190 of its first residents. The 64,000 square feet, $12 million hall embraces fundamental principles of environmentally responsible design, incorporating geothermal heating and cooling, energy-efficient lighting, and locally sourced materials.

Designed to meet the needs of upperclassmen, the hall provides 32 apartment-style units accommodating six students each. The three-bedroom apartments feature open kitchens and living rooms with expansive prairie views. Study suites, laundry rooms, and a meditation space provide additional shared amenities. The 5000 square-feet, two-story community space in Kuyper Hall features a prominent floor-to-ceiling fireplace that anchors the room. This gathering area also houses a performance space with lighting and sound systems, as well as a student-run coffee shop. The mezzanine serves as a living-learning classroom during the day, while providing extra seating or meeting space during the evening.

The Kuyper Apartments design team includes Angelini & Associates Architects, Hoogendoorn Construction, Inc., Structural Design Inc. (SDI), MEP engineer - Engineering Design Associates (EDA), and civil engineer DGR.
