With under a week left in the regular season, playoff spots are not a full lock, but they are close. Before the game on the September 24, there are only three teams with a playoff probability between 10% and 99%, the Indians, Rays, and Rangers.
The Indian's ticket sales have decreased on the secondary market by 24%, which constitutes the second largest decrease across the league. Only the Tigers win out, with a decrease 31% even while their playoff probability is at 100%. After having been teased by the World Series last year, the fans are now simply investing in the October days, rather than spending on the final week of September.
One team, however, is breaking the mold when it comes to ticket sales and playoffs. The Yankees have seen a 28.7% increase in tickets over the last month. The fact they likely will not make the playoffs may actually be the reason for the increase, as legendary closer Mariano Rivera is setting to retire at the end of the Yankees' season. That leaves fans with few chances left to see the legend in his craft, and that means a rise in ticket sales.
Not surprisingly, two games in particular have gone up in price and interest. The final game at yankee Stadium, wherein his retirement and the recently passed retirement-ceremony game wherein his final games were acknowledge. Both games have an average ticket price of $200, which is more than 100% of the regular season average for the Yankees.
Rises were also seen in away games, even at the final trip to Fenway Park, where the long-time rival Red Sox were allowed to pay their final respects to a man who long tortured their hitting base. The Fenway tickets sold for an average of $219 per, which is the most expensive for all Fenway Park games during the season.
