Toronto - Playing competitive soccer is very expensive, with tournament fees, travel costs and league fees running the annual expenditure into the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.
In fact, according to a poll conducted by ESPN Sports, 16 non-MLS clubs participating in the Development Academy revealed that the total outlay for each player can be as high as $6,000 a year, with the average coming out to around $4,000. A similar survey by Forbes Magazine and blog, Stats Dad, monitored the rising costs of soccer and found that the average investment per child rose from $9,076 in 2010 to $11,704 in 2011.
“The rising expenditures pose the greatest threat to the development of soccer as an elite sport in North America”, says Bert Lobo, Former President of the Central Soccer League and the Ontario Youth Soccer League.
“Fortunately, my love for the sport has demanded that I take the initiative to change the status quo, help players to offset the rising cost of competitive sports and secure more value for their investment. It is for this reason why my team and I founded the Youth Soccer League of Ontario (YSLO)”.
With a mandate to promote Soccer inside international markets while making it affordable for elite players, the Youth Soccer League of Ontario (YSLO) creates, develops, and fosters the best club soccer programmes available throughout the Province of Ontario. It aims to improve the level of competitive play of both female as well as male players and instill the ‘love and passion’ for the game”.
Lobo says, “We don’t want players to be overwhelmed by the cost and be frustrated by the lack of support to further their soccer career. The YSLO is committed to creating an affordable, competitive experience for players while assisting them to secure college and university scholarships as well as to equally assist those players seeking a professional contract.”
The business model of the Youth Soccer League Of Ontario is refreshing. Management's goal is to create a more competitively priced tournament and appear to be more interested in helping players to achieve success in the sport they love.
In fact, the YSLO has recently negotiated a strategic partnership with Riverside Canada Football Academy to help players to secure athletic and academic scholarships at various Canadian universities including York University including York University, University of Toronto, Guelph, Waterloo, Ryerson, McGill, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, RMC, Carleton, Trent, Concordia, McMaster, Seneca, Humber, George Brown, University of Montreal, St. Mary's, Acadia, Queen's and the University of Ottawa”, says Lobo.
In the U.S and internationally the scholarship sourcing services offered by Riverside Canada Football Academy, Northern Recruits and YSLO expands dramatically to include Salem University, West Virginia, University of Maine at Fort Kent, Cornell, UNLV, Robert Morris, Buffalo State, Florida International, James Madison, Niagara, Slippery Rock, Syracuse, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Utica, Villanova, Wright State University, Rider University, Longwood University, YALE -Ivy league School, University of Pittsburgh, Radford University, Colgate University, George Mason University, Columbia University -Ivy league School, University of San Francisco, University of California Riverside, California State Fullerton University, College of William and Mary, Hartwick College and many more.
Lobo adds, “This new alliance is extremely powerful. Together YSLO, RCFA and Northern Recruits have vaulted to the top, becoming a leading enabler of success in the soccer community. Hundreds of players have already gone through our system. This includes players who have successfully signed athletic scholarships or have signed with professional teams.”
“Moreover, our network of international professional soccer contacts is vast as we boast relationships with Chelsea, Arsenal, QPR, West Ham, Leyton Orient, Charlton, FC Malmo, Fortuna Hjorring, Tottenham, Dynamo Zagreb, Watford, Toronto F.C. and many more. “
These relationships have allowed Bert Lobo to help players to sign professional contracts with Pro clubs and their Academies, such as with Real Madrid, Toronto F.C, Chelsea, Fortuna Hjorring and Interwood.
Players that join the new league can tap into YSLO resources and that of Riverside Canada Football Academy to enhance their ability to compete and train in Europe or at top colleges in the U.S and Canada.
