  • Globally acknowledged names in mountaineering, duo announce plans to create awareness and promote this sport across the country
  • Close friends, the duo have scaled some challenging peaks across the world, Europe’s highest peak Mt. Elbrus in the Russian Caucasus range (5642 meters) as recently as August 7, 2013

12th Sept. 2013, Mumbai: Close friends and Mountaineers Rajeev Saumitra and Ameet Singh,  today announced that not just do they plan to climb many more peaks together but would also be aggressively focusing on creating awareness about and promoting Mountaineering as a preferred sport in India. The duo recently scaled Europe’s highest peak Mt. Elbrus (5642 meters) of the Russian Caucasus range, on 7 August 2013 and have together and individually scaled some of the world’s renowned peak’s, They aims at doing so by

(a) Launching a website that would also act as a beginners’ guide for mountaineering while documenting their experience, and

(b) aggressively participating as well as coordinating mountaineering camps and expeditions.

Interacting with media persons at a hotel here in Pune on Thursday, in between an impressive presentation, the two mountaineering enthusiasts declared that they would be focusing on not just promoting mountaineering as a preferred hobby sport in India but also helping in raising awareness and organizing as well as aiding climbers with advise & assistance for adventure. They want to participate in and help coordinate mountaineering camps and expeditions.

Commenting on this resolve, Rajeev Saumitra said: “as Mountaineering is one of the oldest adventure sports in the world that has gained popularity amongst Indians, especially those like us who want to get away from the high-stress, capital-intensive ecosystems in which we live. It is a probably the best tool to reconnect with and re-discover not just ones own self but also mother nature which for most of us is just visuals we see on channels like the National Geographic” .

“What is important to understand is that mountaineering is not just a sport for youth and those going through mid-age crisis but is a sport that can immensely help our children evolve into far better, more aware and healthier human beings. In fact children are far more agile and natural mountaineers than us adults and it is sheer pleasure seeing them climb. However, it is an expensive adventure sport, that, unlike in other countries, gets little or no aid/funding from government or any other quarter. “It is Rajeev and my collective Endeavour to dedicatedly work towards changing this equation,” Ameet Singh.

While Ameet led India’s first successful expedition to Mt. Ama Dablam 6856 metres, Rajeev is the first ethnic Bihari to summit both Mt. Elbrus and Mt. Everest.

Notes To The Editor

Rajeev Saumitra

Was it his several attempts at the administrative services examinations or a burning desire to chase the basic human natural instinct to move upwards that baptized him by fire? Rajeev Saumitra found his calling in filling the gap that most teachers didn’t offer in prepping aspirants towards India’s competitive exams. He founded Paramount Coaching Centre in 2006 in Delhi. Yes, the mount in paramount being a reflection of his deep personal love for mountains.

It didn’t take him long before his love for geography found its following in his students who responded to his unconventional teaching methods with overwhelming numbers. Paramount is one of Delhi's leading institutes today. Success helped a new perspective dawn. The need of a geographer to go closer to nature and the mountain in paramount became more and more evident and driving.

He met Ameet Singh in a mountaineering course at ABVIMAS Manali. They then trekked to Kala Patthar and EBC and climbed their first mountain Imja Tse (Island Peak, Nepal Himalayas) 6189 mtrs together in October 2011. In the same breath Ameet went on to lead India’s first expedition to climb the formidable Ama Dablam 6856 meters in Nepal, regarded by many alpinists and mountaineers as a complex technical climb. Rajeev had by then trained his sights on Everest.

While Ameet busied himself climbing in the South American Andes, Rajeev made his maiden attempt on Everest. Bad weather forced him to turn back from camp 4 (approx 8000 meters) on the mountain in 2012. Not one to give up easily, he made it up the mountain in this year’s summer climbing season on 22 May 2013, Incidentally, it was the best birthday gift he could give his wife Nitu Singh. He became the first Delhi resident and India’s second ethnic Bihari to summit Everest.

The friends came together this August and they attempted Mt. Elbrus in the Russian Caucasus mountain range 5642 meters (Europe’s highest peak) without guide support on 7 August 2013. Their stupendous success at the mountain made this the best Independence Day gift they could give themselves, their friends, families and their country.Rajeev is also the first ethnic Bihari to summit Mt. Elbrus.

Ameet Singh

Current day Ameet remains an out of work businessman -he was last working at setting up a power IPP. Closure at that role gave him an opportunity to renew himself in another way. He says he may be driven by a need to push ourselves over what we know to better our potential, and he has climbed some of the world’s highest mountains in difficult geographies, led expeditions which made some history and challenged himself in his enterprise. He has traveled half the world as an adventurer, an explorer, trying to redefine who he is and still seeks answers.

Ameet's purpose in life is to make it better. He has climbed some mountains, Himalayas - Mt. Ama Dablam 6856 mtrs (lead India’s first successful summit, expedition), Mt. Imja Tse / Island Peak 6189 mtrs summit, Mt. Kamet (7856 mtrs), Andes - Mt. Huyana Potosi 6193 summit (Andes Bolivia)Mt. Aconcagua 6962 mtrs (Andes Argentina / Chile) – Mt. Elbrus Russia (Europe's highest peak 5644 meters - scaled 8 August 2013).  An Intrepid Explorer, when not in the middle of the Amazonian jungles, swimming with Dolphins, Piranha or Gators, skydiving or in other rain-forests, mountains, oceans or deserts – an Environmentalist & Organic Farmer, mediocre mountaineer, part time science buff, adventurer & relative businessman.

However, professionally he works to build businesses in the areas of renewable and natural resources and so that people and organizations have folks like him to turn to, for help to cross the green divide. His sector of interest is energy. Email: ameetgsingh@gmail.com
