Halloween May Reveal the Retail Ghost of Christmas Future

Austin,TX- September 12, 2013- Halloween shoppers will be spending a little more this year, but retailers are already a bit spooked.

"They're scared, frankly," says Steve Schaffer, CEO of offers.com. "Back to School sales were a bit of a bust. Some of the major chains are adjusting their sales projections downward for the season ahead. That means, buckle up shoppers! There are going to be some bargains ahead."

Holiday creep isn't just for Christmas anymore. Back to School displays were up, almost as soon as school was out. Black cats, witches and candies will hit shelves before the first leaves of Autumn are on the ground. That may help retailers. 

A survey by Offers.com supports the 'shop early-shop often' trend of holiday buyers. Twice as many shoppers begin the search for their costumes well before the first Jack O' Lanterns go on the front porch.

"Our surveys indicate shoppers will spend slightly more this year for Halloween costumes and candies," says Schaffer. "Last year orders were running at about $69 per order, this year we're looking at $73 as the average order."

Just where those dollars are going suggests an interesting trend for the scariest night of the year.  Auldts are moving in on Trick or Treat fantasies.

"Kids are looking for costumes that spin off the hottest superheroes from the summer box office," adds Schaffer. "Their parents are looking for something you might not see on the big screen. The one group mercifully spared this year, appears to be the family pet. Our survey indicates fewer than ten percent of shoppers intend to buy costumes for their pets."
